Melancholy Menagerie: A Gaze Into the World of Big Eyes
Artworks of mournful, big eyed waifs by famed Keane, Eden, and Lee were so popular in the 60's that the images have become iconic after nearly 4 decades.
The subjects are cute yet unsettling, with an eerie sweetness that continues to haunt and captivate. The influence of this art on contemporary culture can be seen in various trends and products, including children's toys such as the very popular and hightly collected Blythe and Little Miss No Name dolls.
Melancholy Menagerie: A Gaze Into the World of Big Eyes will delve into the idea of why the Big Eyes character was so poplular in the 60's and exploreits resurgence in contemporary art. The exhibit pays homage to the early artist working anonymously under pseudonyms, recognizing them as influences on a current art movement popularizing these charming figures of sadness. In addition to vintage art, this exhibit includes contemporary pieces by Camille Rose Garcia, Yosuke Ueno, Mark Ryden, Sas Christian, Tim Burton and others.
